Visual Storytelling a Modern Trend
By Elina Maniati (Intrasoft)
Visual storytelling has been around since the world could see. A visit to the Valltorte caves in southeastern Spain, for example, will offer you stories that date back as far as 10,000 years ago. The newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane, in 1911, coined the famous phrase: “Use a picture. It’s worth a thousand words.”
It all begins inside of us. Consider these facts from the Visual Teaching Alliance:
The brain can see images that last for just 13 milliseconds.
Our eyes can register 36,000 visual messages per hour.
We can get the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10 of a second.
90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual.
Visuals are processed 60,000X faster in the brain than text.
40 percent of nerve fibers are linked to the retina.
It seems that what worked back in ancient times, still works today. But of course the state of visual storytelling is changing every day, especially in the context of the digital revolution.
Nowadays, according to a survey, 80% of website visitors will watch a video compared to only 20% who will read a full text, nearly half of the people who watch videos online take action in response, while 2/3 of online shoppers are more likely to buy something after watching a video about it. Visual storytelling has become one of the most important techniques in today’s digital marketing environment.
Marcel Just, the director of the Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging at Carnegie Mellon University, said in an interview with Melissa Ludtke from Neiman Reports: “Processing print isn’t something the human brain was built for. The printed word is a human artifact. It’s very convenient and it’s worked very well for us for 5,000 years, but it’s an invention of human beings. By contrast Mother Nature has built into our brain our ability to see the visual world and interpret it.”
These facts indicate the power of visual information and the impact of visual storytelling for humans!
That’s why visual storytelling is so important for marketers and content marketing based on visual media. According to a survey, 65% of participating senior marketers say that visual media is crucial for the communication of their brand stories and they strongly believe that visual media will become more important in the future.
